Teaching / Instructional Materials

I have been teaching as an adjunct instructor for the Dedman School of Hospitality for three years. Courses I've taught include:

  • Club Management
  • Managing Service Organizations
  • Orientation to Professional Golf Management
  • European Travel and Tourism
  • European Wines and Food

Chocolates in Switzerland
During the summer of 2013 I was hired as program leader for FSU's International Programs and the Dedman School of Hospitality's Study Abroad in Switzerland program.  As program leader, I developed curriculum, researched and communicated with tour sites, and planned budgets.  While in Switzerland, I was responsible for 23 college students, an instructor and a teaching assistant for the program. I managed all teaching and tour logistics and taught two courses.

During the summer of 2014 I taught two courses for FSU International Programs and the Dedman School of Hospitality in Valencia, Spain.  I arranged for the classes to tour and meet with managers of private clubs, hotels, restaurants and other businesses in the Valencia area, in order to enhance their learning experience.  The club management course was featured on pages 18 and 19 of the Valencia program's magazine:

Nomadic Noles

Class tour of Valencia's Soccer Stadium Estadio Mestalla

Class tour and lecture at La Sella Golf Resort

Class tour of Valencia's 5 star hotel Las Arenas

Class tour of Valencia Yacht Club

The following are examples of my original instructional materials within categories:

Needs Assessment / Learner Analysis

To gain insight into my learner characteristics, I survey my students on their pre-existing knowledge of the course topics.  Here's an example of a survey for my Club Management class (taught spring 2014):

Content Delivery

I typically utilize Power Point presentations to guide my classroom instruction.  In order to gain learner engagement in a large class size, I incorporate participatory activities in which learners with pre-existing knowledge on the topic help with instruction.  I accomplish this by simulating a "talk show" in which the students are my talk show guests.  The rest of the class participates by asking my guests questions.  Here's an example of one such simulation:

For a European Travel & Tourism course  I taught in Switzerland, I came up with an assignment that gave the students concrete learning experiences.  Here is the assignment sheet:

Collaborative Learning

The following documents are examples of a group collaborative learning project and it's corresponding grading rubric for HFT 3240 Managing Service Organizations that I taught in spring 2012, fall 2012, and spring 2013.

Assessment

I use many forms of assessment to determine a student's acquisition of knowledge.  Here are examples of a post instruction survey and a final paper grading rubric, both from the Club Management course I taught in fall 2013 and spring 2014.
